STU48's brand new single is released to-day! What do you mean you didn't realise STU48 were still releasing singles? As established, I have spent a lot of money this week, but I still ordered both copies of Sukisugite Naku because last year's single, Kizutsuku Koto ga Seishun da really made an impact on me. The centre of this new single is not, however, Takao Sayaka, but rather the third draft's Nakamura Mai.

MaiQ!

Arriving in 2017 alongside NMB48's Abe Wakana and AKB48's Omori Maho, the third draft went into effect in 2018 and MaiQ made her first appearance with the relatively new group. She is there in the senbatsu for STU's second single, the delightful Kaze wo Matsu, and since that moment, despite not even being in the group's first generation, she has been a regular feature in every release since, acting as one of three centres in 2022 for Hana wa Dare no Mono? alongside Takino Yumiko and Ishida Chiho; outside of B sides and stage performances, however, this is MaiQ's first time as the centre of a new single, and whenever this happens in one of the smaller 48 groups, the provincial 48 groups, I immediately look to see if it is a consolation prize for that particular member's graduation. Good news, everyone! It doesn't look like that's the case here!

For the longest time, it has felt like MaiQ's apotheosis to centre has been on the cards. From as early as 2018, with the release of AKB48's NO WAY MAN, she appeared with other members of the sister groups aged under 19—including former NGT darlings Kato Minami and Takakura Moeka—on B side Ohayo Kara Hajimaru Sekai, a song which to, my mind, has more heart than the A side it accompanies, offering more of a glimpse of the flavour of what the provincial groups might become.

Despite being in the draft pool together, MaiQ and Oki Yuka did not become friends until they both joined STU, a missed opportunity that they soon made up for, the two of them often referred to as OkiMai by fans, both of them setting the tone for what STU would be as Okada Nana returned to her main activities and the group was left to stand on its own. Against all odds, the girl who inherited her nickname from school due to her lips, making her apparently like the titular Obake no Q-Taro, has become one of the most familiar faces in the group, and this centre position for the new single feels long, long overdue. Congratulations, MaiQ! 🎉💖

Half of the names in the book are still names. Kilowog is still Kilowog. But, you know, Tomar Re, I think he's like Re something else now. Technically speaking, Jo Mullein is Tomar Jo. God, that does sound very manga. Maybe what everybody's saying is right. I am accidentally writing a manga. -- Al Ewing

  1. In one of the books I'm reading right now, they frequently make references to another researcher by the name of "Fruhstuck." On a hunch, I looked it up and saw that her name is actually "Frühstück," with umlauts over the u's, which is German for "breakfast." I suppose this is an occupational surname that you wind up with if your ancestors worked at Waffle Haus.
  2. In the past I've mentioned Cherry Bullet's "Hands Up", which uses "Für Elise" as part of the song. Today I discovered Twice Dahyun's "Chess," which uses the same song even more directly. Enjoy!
  3. The fact that I didn't get this posted during the Olympics shows how off-task I've been recently, but I've been doing better for the past couple of days, so you get the post now. This year's Games featured an odd intersection of two of my interests: The Olympics and intellectual property law. Several figure skaters had trouble getting clearance to use the music they wanted for their routines. Intellectual property law is a mess anyway, but once you're crossing pretty much every border on earth and involving major international organizations like the IOC and numerous of the world's largest broadcasters and on top of that there's a lot of money on the line, things just get even more bonkers.

Hope you're all doing well!

Shortest car rental ever

After spending our week at Steamboat, we needed to transfer south to Avon, Colorado, where we would spend the next couple of weeks skiing at Beaver Creek and Vail. Through past research we knew that using a shuttle for that transfer was cost prohibitive, so I looked into my car rental options. Luckily, Enterprise has a rental office in the city of Steamboat Springs, so that I wouldn't have to go all the way out to the airport to pick up the rental car. And, even more conveniently, they had a counter in the lobby of the condo complex we would be staying at in Avon.

While I was originally planning to just use the city transit bus to pick up the car, but the staff at the resort where we were staying in Steamboat made it clear that their shuttle would be able to take me to the Enterprise office, and they seemed happy to do so. After I picked up the car, I drove back to our accommodations to load up the luggage, and we headed south to Avon. It was a sunny day and the drive was pleasant and relaxing.

We arrived in Avon less than 2 hours later. After unloading the luggage and checking in, I returned the keys at the Enterprise counter in the lobby. The total time on the rental was less than two and a half hours!

Skiing Steamboat 2026

Our first ski destination was the Steamboat ski resort, which we consider our "home mountain." This visit marked our 20th time skiing the resort, and it felt like coming home. Because of the ongoing drought in the Rocky Mountains, this was the thinnest we've ever seen the snow here. However, the grooming crew was doing a heroic job of keeping the mountain skiable, and we still had a good time and got in some excellent skiing over the six days we were here.

On our first day, we randomly met a very nice gentleman in a lift line who was skiing alone, and ended up skiing with him for the next several days. He was less familiar with the mountain, so we show him around and helped him find places that we thought he might enjoy skiing. We even had some fun playing with sport video cameras, capturing simultaneous videos that I was later able to combine into split screen format.

I also took one day at Steamboat to ski on some demo skis. It was my first step towards replacing my 20+ year old skis. I liked two of the pairs I skied on that day, but *hated* the third. Ultimately, the day left me still undecided about what skis I might buy to replace my old ones.

Our final two days at Steamboat, we skied alone, but we visited some of our favorite parts of the mountain, and finished our week at Steamboat feeling like we got as much good skiing as was possible for the conditions.

Millsage and Ikka Dumb Rock First Songs
“Kashi Kaisen” is similar to the type of anisong I usually enjoy, so it’s an easy and comfortable listen, but it doesn’t bring anything shocking or unique to the concept (neutral statement) for it to really hook me in. I am interested in more piano led songs from Bandori though.

The title itself is what piques my interest in millsage’s themeing the most, the idea of starting a war after being resuscitated. Though I still feel a bit conflicted about the lyrics, since while there are some interesting ideas in there, much of the imagery and topics overlap with Morfonica (rebirth) and AveMygo (salvation & loss). The most interesting part to me was that the “you” the song addresses is unknowing and unreachable, so the speaker directed that compassion elsewhere instead (with something as gentle as flowers, contrasting nicely with the war imagery) at the end of the song. I hope to see millsage develop its own distinct identity in the future.

“Homie’s Tie” is in the opposite situation, where it has a solid sense of identity right from the start, but the music doesn’t (at least immediately) appeal to me. I like the theme of creating your own tight-knit bonds, which then become a place you can return back to, your sense of security, and something worthy of protection. Something for others to feel jealous of and for you to feel blessed by. It’s very sweet and does a good job at establishing how strong that connection is before I even know anything about the characters. I’m still unsure I’ll click with them, but I’ll keep an eye on them just in case.

Our Notes Trailer
The hype hasn’t really set in yet, but what they’ve shown so far looks interesting. My only complaint so far is that the composition of the (untrained?) cards is boring and repetitive. I think the rest of the art style is beautifully vibrant and still a step up in quality, but the composition is holding it back. It just disappoints me as someone who used to be a Bandori main that Garupa struggles to even claw its way back to its old quality standard, let alone continually delight and surprise like its competitors can. It’s been so long since I’ve felt that way about anything Garupa has done :(.

Bandori Fandom in 2026
Disappointing (but not surprising) to see the Bandori fandom has only become more resistant to change since Morfonica was added to the game. I might as well make it my goal to block the majority of the English fanbase before the game comes out.

eftsoons (eft-SOONZ) - adv., (arch.) soon after, presently; (obs.) again, another time.

Zounds! I mostly know the first sense but have seen some uses (mainly in medieval romances) of the second. The divergence in meanings goes back to its roots in Old English eftsōna, from eft, after/again (related to æfter, the form that became after) + sōna, soon.

Most of the time, I wear the big bold bead earrings that I make myself. I have at least one pair in each of the colours that I wear (all right, it is a fairly limited palette so that I don't have to have too many clothes - most of my clothes go with most of my other clothes). But every so often I prefer to wear a pair of gold sleeper hoops, these occasions mainly being SCA events where I'm away from home and I don't know whether there is going to be a convenient mirror. (Unlike some people, I am quite incapable of putting my earrings in without one.) I can't sleep in the big bead earrings, but I can in the sleeper hoops; I can just put those in before I leave the flat and then not even have to think about them till I get home. I prefer them to be about 15 mm in diameter, so that the base hangs below my earlobe but they're not too big; the Creole style looks awesome on a lot of people but it's not really me.

The only problem is, my current pair of gold sleeper hoops is no longer wearable because it's so badly tarnished; this is a bit of a puzzle, because all the other earrings I've had from the same place are still looking fine. It's not even as if I've worn them a great deal. So they need replacing, and obviously I need to look somewhere else for that.

There is a certain company - let us call them X Jewellery - who make very good earrings. They're hypoallergenic to a very high standard; while I'm all right with regular hypoallergenic (I have a nickel allergy but I don't have a problem with any other metals), these ones work for people who usually can't wear earrings at all. They're also highly tarnish-resistant and very good value. So you might think I'd go straight to them, except... there is a bit of a problem.

It's their marketing. They were all right at first; I dealt with them for a few months, had maybe three or four pairs of excellent earrings from them, all fine and dandy. But then they started to introduce some very intrusive new marketing practices. All of a sudden, I couldn't so much as look at anything on their site without getting an e-mail shortly afterwards strongly implying that I "forgot" to buy the item in question. (No. I did not forget. I chose not to, and the subsequent e-mail made me feel even less inclined to buy it.) At about the same time, they also started getting very over-familiar in their marketing e-mails, starting with something like "hey bestie!". No. I'm not your best friend. You don't even know me. I'm one of your customers, and probably not for long at that.

I complained but it didn't do any good, so I unsubscribed from their website and their mailing list and sent them a polite but firm e-mail telling them exactly why they'd just lost a previously happy customer. So now, although I know they sell good products, I was very hesitant about going back there, and I was pretty sure I was going to give them a different e-mail address if I did (and one I could easily block them on if I needed to, at that). I had a good look elsewhere, but the only pair I could find that was likely to be equally reliable was more expensive. Cheap pairs of gold-finish hoops that size are easy to find, but I do need something a bit better, because otherwise if they're going to keep tarnishing like that it's a false economy (basically, it's the Vimes boots thing).

So, very reluctantly, I crept back onto the X Jewellery website, where I found that the size I wanted was out of stock (it generally is, as that style always sells out very fast). Using the safe e-mail address, I signed up for a notification to let me know when it was back in stock. They tried to get me to sign up for everything else, and I went... nope. Not doing that. Not the website, not the mailing list. I just want the notification, and when it comes in I'll just buy the dratted earrings and run.

Given the fact that I had specifically not signed up for the mailing list, you would think, wouldn't you, that I would not then get a marketing e-mail a few days later? Well, you would if we weren't talking about this particular company. Needless to say, I did. I immediately unsubscribed from the mailing list, and for a while I thought no more of it apart from "how annoying, they're still at it", but then a little later it occurred to me that in unsubscribing from the mailing list I hadn't signed up for in the first place, I might also have lost my stock notification. So I e-mailed them to explain what had happened and enquire whether or not this was the case. I was perfectly fair about it. I said that if my stock notification was still live, I'd be happy to buy the earrings from them; but if I couldn't have a stock notification without being on the mailing list, I was not going to sign up for another one and I would be going elsewhere.

They have not yet replied; and if they haven't by this afternoon, I shall indeed be going elsewhere. Sorry not sorry... "bestie".

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Happy Lantern Festival, as the first Full Moon of the Chinese New Year dawns... or dusks... you know what I mean?

Those of us hoping for at least one month of the current US Presidemcy which wasn't an entire new verse of "We Didn't Start the Fire" were disappointed again when the US and Israel decided to bomb Iran. And those wondering "Why" have the disturbing benefit of multiple choices answers, as Trump, Vance, Rubio and Netenyahu all appear to have different explanations.

The fact folks were instantly able to point to a series of tweets from 2012 when Trump speculated that Obama would, because of plummetting popularity declare war on Iran as a distraction has not gone un-noticed.

Sigh...

A by-election in England last week gave us the first Green MP to ever win a by-election (As opposed to a General Election), and by a handsome majority too. This led Reform, who are finding out out that being hostile arseholes to pretty much every possible minority group is not paying off the way they hoped it would, to immediately pull a Trump card, and claim/whine that the election was rigged against them.

We bid a sad farewell to co-creator of Red Dwarf, Rob Grant, who passed away at the age of 70. "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!"

I've not watched the new Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode yet, but I have high hopes.

I did watch the latest Starfleet Academy which is a strange mix between working through grief via "Our Town" (a 1938 meta-textual play which, as far as I am aware, has no real pop culture relevance outside the US) and a rather beautiful subplot (Which was a lot stronger than the actual plot IMHO) with Robert Picardo's Doctor and SAM.

The feelings General Glory inspires in me are…mixed. I think he was useful as comic relief in the JLI’s last year-and-change, when the stories were otherwise leaning toward heaviness. I don’t miss him at all, but I think he’s fun in small doses.

A five-issue introductory arc is nobody’s idea of a small dose, and “Glory Bound” has some logical flaws on top of that. But Giffen and DeMatteis are interesting even when they go astray, Linda Medley knows her stuff, and the plot gets off to a promising start.

Like the priest at Mister Miracle’s funeral, this is a Kirby tribute that I suspect left Kirby more annoyed than gratified. )

The weekend was honestly nice.

Sunday was my mother's birthday and we surprised her after breakfast with flowers, cake, cookies, and her actual gift (socks! she asked for socks!) and she seemed really happy. I peeked out the doorwall in the living room and the snowdrops were up and blooming! (No sign of the crocuses yet, but none of us were expecting the snowdrops and those are always first.)

Saturday's nerd show was also good. If I could change one thing, it'd be moving the hours from 11-4 to, like, 9-2 or something. Big afternoon die-off.

It was sunny earlier, I had the energy to get quite a few chores done (or at least worked on) and got the all-fi set up. A few weeks back, I got about fifteen notices that the phone company is discontinuing landline service to this area. So my options were try their device that I assume uses the cellular network (yes I know that's not really what it is anymore, but for description's sake here) or go to the reliable and fast and absolutely miserable to deal with cable company. Their device, the 'all-fi', which sounds like a cult, has a free seven day trial to see if it'll work/have a signal so I finally got it and set it up. Unexpectedly, quite literally unexpectedly, I have a good signal and internet that's probably a hundred times faster than previous (not an exaggeration). I'm going to keep adding devices as I only have two tablets connected right now, but I think this is going to work out okay. (And the dire cable company is still always an option.) The set-up was obnoxious (an app that had to go on a phone, not a tablet) and I haven't entirely ruled out ornamental hermitude, but... so far so good.

Built: one small lotus flower brick kit from the nerd show, black Levinix, white Iglight (getting lots of customization, lol), dorky Zeta Gundam 'marble' shooter.

I'd also registered for CitrusCon but I really didn't do much with it because I was busy with the nerd show and also just... didn't really enjoy trying to communicate on the discord. Textual equivalency of being in a room with a thousand people yelling to each other.

carbolic (kahr-BOL-ik) - n., a caustic white crystalline compound, C6H5OH, derived from benzene and used in resins, plastics, and pharmaceuticals and in dilute form as a disinfectant and antiseptic, now more commonly called phenol.

And as a short form for carbolic soap, a mildly antiseptic soap containing it, which was the first commercially available disinfectant soap. The name was coined in 1834 in German as Carbolsäure (modern German Karbolsäure), carbolic acid by the chemist, Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, who first derived it, from coal tar -- thus the carbon connection.
