Author's Notes: HAPPY POWER RANGERS DAY!! I made Sentinel of Stories wait almost three years before posting it, and every single day of those three years he asked me when I was going to post it. This isn't so much a Power Rangers fic, but a Sentinel of Stories fic, and, as such, you may recognise many elements from his work here. also: external link.

We don't get to see much of Nishino Miki in Sailor Zombie. In fact, the one episode she is in features her as a zombie, groaning as she strains against her restraints, so, ah, maybe it's not the best representation of her talent?

Mikichan!

Mikichan lived her whole AKB life in Team 4! She passed auditions in 2012 as a member of the fourteenth generation alongside Kojima Mako and Okada Nana, both of whom she was close friends with during her time in the group. A year after doing her duty as a kenkyuusei, she was promoted to the new Minegishi Team 4 unveiled in 2013 at the Tokyo Dome concert that year, and would remain there until 2017, just shy of five years as a member, when she felt it time to challenge herself to do something new.

Whilst in Team 4, Mikichan put in the work in the theatre, appearing in a string of performances—from a revial of Boku no Taiyo to a new staging of Himawarigumi's Yume wo Shinaseru Wake ni Ikanai. She became a regular presence on AKB B sides from UZA onwards, and in 2013, was part of a the adorable sub-unit, Tentoumu Chu!, alongside, no surprises, Okada and Kojima, and also NMB48's Shibuya Nagisa, SKE's Kitagawa Ryoha, and Tomonaga Mio and Tashima Meru from HKT48, all of whom had initially been kenkyuusei around the same time.

In 2014, Mikichan, Kojima, Okada, Tashima and Tomonaga all made it into the senbatsu for Labrador Retriever, further bolstering awareness of Tentoumu Chu! and Mikichan herself. In 2015, with the release of Halloween Night, Okada and Mikichan appeared in the dance instruction video for the single alongside guest choreographer, Papaya Suzuki—who some of you might recognise from variety TV, and, more importantly, as Kagen in the Kamen Rider Zi-o movie, Over Quartzer.

Mikichan!

Throughout their time in AKB, Kojima, Okada, and Mikichan were often referred to as 'the Three Musketeers,' which I find impossibly lovely. I think the friendship between these members is testament to how sometimes throwing yourself into unknown circumstances can make fast and close friends of those around you. I really hope the three of them still talk.

Following her graduation, Mikichan worked for a while at Uchida Mayumi's Kabukicho restaurant, Yakiniku IWA, whilst still also performing roles on TV and on stage. In 2022, she announced her marriage to Yamamoto Keiichi of comedy duo, Gokuraku Tombo and Yoshimotozaka46, and last October, she gave birth to a baby girl. There's a large age difference between Mikichan and her husband, and he has quite the track record, but I want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt here. "I can't feel it," she said of the age gap between them in her statement, and I want to believe that, despite the odds, despite how difficult it must have been to convince friends and family, the two of them are good for one another. I want the best for Mikichan. I want the best for all members of AKB. I hope that Yamamoto can keep up with his young bride, I hope that Okada and Kojima turn up regularly at their home, and I hope that that home is a happy one.

Congratualtions, Nishino Miki! I want you to be happy!

I'll start with the tl;dr summary to make sure everyone sees it and then explain further: As of September 1, we will temporarily be forced to block access to Dreamwidth from all IP addresses that geolocate to Mississippi for legal reasons. This block will need to continue until we either win the legal case entirely, or the district court issues another injunction preventing Mississippi from enforcing their social media age verification and parental consent law against us.

Mississippi residents, we are so, so sorry. We really don't want to do this, but the legal fight we and Netchoice have been fighting for you had a temporary setback last week. We genuinely and honestly believe that we're going to win it in the end, but the Fifth Circuit appellate court said that the district judge was wrong to issue the preliminary injunction back in June that would have maintained the status quo and prevented the state from enforcing the law requiring any social media website (which is very broadly defined, and which we definitely qualify as) to deanonymize and age-verify all users and obtain parental permission from the parent of anyone under 18 who wants to open an account.

Netchoice took that appellate ruling up to the Supreme Court, who declined to overrule the Fifth Circuit with no explanation -- except for Justice Kavanaugh agreeing that we are likely to win the fight in the end, but saying that it's no big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime.

Needless to say, it's a big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime. The Mississippi law is a breathtaking state overreach: it forces us to verify the identity and age of every person who accesses Dreamwidth from the state of Mississippi and determine who's under the age of 18 by collecting identity documents, to save that highly personal and sensitive information, and then to obtain a permission slip from those users' parents to allow them to finish creating an account. It also forces us to change our moderation policies and stop anyone under 18 from accessing a wide variety of legal and beneficial speech because the state of Mississippi doesn't like it -- which, given the way Dreamwidth works, would mean blocking people from talking about those things at all. (And if you think you know exactly what kind of content the state of Mississippi doesn't like, you're absolutely right.)

Needless to say, we don't want to do that, either. Even if we wanted to, though, we can't: the resources it would take for us to build the systems that would let us do it are well beyond our capacity. You can read the sworn declaration I provided to the court for some examples of how unworkable these requirements are in practice. (That isn't even everything! The lawyers gave me a page limit!)

Unfortunately, the penalties for failing to comply with the Mississippi law are incredibly steep: fines of $10,000 per user from Mississippi who we don't have identity documents verifying age for, per incident -- which means every time someone from Mississippi loaded Dreamwidth, we'd potentially owe Mississippi $10,000. Even a single $10,000 fine would be rough for us, but the per-user, per-incident nature of the actual fine structure is an existential threat. And because we're part of the organization suing Mississippi over it, and were explicitly named in the now-overturned preliminary injunction, we think the risk of the state deciding to engage in retaliatory prosecution while the full legal challenge continues to work its way through the courts is a lot higher than we're comfortable with. Mississippi has been itching to issue those fines for a while, and while normally we wouldn't worry much because we're a small and obscure site, the fact that we've been yelling at them in court about the law being unconstitutional means the chance of them lumping us in with the big social media giants and trying to fine us is just too high for us to want to risk it. (The excellent lawyers we've been working with are Netchoice's lawyers, not ours!)

All of this means we've made the extremely painful decision that our only possible option for the time being is to block Mississippi IP addresses from accessing Dreamwidth, until we win the case. (And I repeat: I am absolutely incredibly confident we'll win the case. And apparently Justice Kavanaugh agrees!) I repeat: I am so, so sorry. This is the last thing we wanted to do, and I've been fighting my ass off for the last three years to prevent it. But, as everyone who follows the legal system knows, the Fifth Circuit is gonna do what it's gonna do, whether or not what they want to do has any relationship to the actual law.

We don't collect geolocation information ourselves, and we have no idea which of our users are residents of Mississippi. (We also don't want to know that, unless you choose to tell us.) Because of that, and because access to highly accurate geolocation databases is extremely expensive, our only option is to use our network provider's geolocation-based blocking to prevent connections from IP addresses they identify as being from Mississippi from even reaching Dreamwidth in the first place. I have no idea how accurate their geolocation is, and it's possible that some people not in Mississippi might also be affected by this block. (The inaccuracy of geolocation is only, like, the 27th most important reason on the list of "why this law is practically impossible for any site to comply with, much less a tiny site like us".)

If your IP address is identified as coming from Mississippi, beginning on September 1, you'll see a shorter, simpler version of this message and be unable to proceed to the site itself. If you would otherwise be affected, but you have a VPN or proxy service that masks your IP address and changes where your connection appears to come from, you won't get the block message, and you can keep using Dreamwidth the way you usually would.

On a completely unrelated note while I have you all here, have I mentioned lately that I really like ProtonVPN's service, privacy practices, and pricing? They also have a free tier available that, although limited to one device, has no ads or data caps and doesn't log your activity, unlike most of the free VPN services out there. VPNs are an excellent privacy and security tool that every user of the internet should be familiar with! We aren't affiliated with Proton and we don't get any kickbacks if you sign up with them, but I'm a satisfied customer and I wanted to take this chance to let you know that.

Again, we're so incredibly sorry to have to make this announcement, and I personally promise you that I will continue to fight this law, and all of the others like it that various states are passing, with every inch of the New Jersey-bred stubborn fightiness you've come to know and love over the last 16 years. The instant we think it's less legally risky for us to allow connections from Mississippi IP addresses, we'll undo the block and let you know.

I've mentionned a couple times on this journal that I was writing a pair of Natasha and Gamora fics about them escaping the Soul Stone via different afterlives, and now here they are!

Characters: Natasha Romanov (Marvel), Gamora (Marvel)

Series: Part 1 of katabasis
Summary:

Natasha died on Vormir and awoke in the Suicide Wood of Dante's Hell. With Gamora's help, she made her way out.

Characters: Gamora (Marvel), Natasha Romanov (Marvel)
Additional Tags: Mesopotamian Mythology - Freeform, Body Horror, Fix-It
Series: Part 2 of katabasis
Summary:

For Gamora, the Soul Stone looked like Irkalla.

There's no real order to read them in -- they're added to the the series in the order I wrote them in, but reading them the other way around works too.

I had loads of fun writing a more poetic style than my usual in the Natasha fic. You get points for spotting the Hadestown reference, bonus point for the Galavant reference and mega bonus points for the (translated) Brassens quote.

Sort of spoilers for the Natasha fic, I guessI link Thor to Charon, not Phlegyas, because of the Etruscan psychopomp Charun having a hammer.

Sort of spoilers for the Gamora fic, I guessI got the tidbit about Mesopotamians burying their dead beneath their homes from Dominique Charpin's "La vie méconnue des temples mésopotamiens" ("The unknown life of mesopotamian temples"), specifically the section on the temples of Nergal.

I'm so happy I've finally managed to finish and edit and post fics! It's been... way too long.

There are a couple of things I saw around the Internet over the last few days that have been really bothering me, but I don't want to go back there and start fights in other people's places, so I'm coming here to rant in my own place. Feel free to reply or not, whether you agree with me or not. I just need to get these things out of my system.

  1. One of my friends on Facebook made a post about how she took a ukulele lessen recently. She was very pleased with her accomplishment — in one hour she had learned 3 chords and learned to play a song. Someone else — I'm assuming one of her friends, apparently a guitar player — made a comment to her post that he thought the three chords she learned would transfer over to the top four strings on the guitar. She correctly told him that they wouldn't — which he may or may not have accepted, and I didn't stick around to find out — but at the same time I was sitting there fuming: Even if they would transfer so the fuck what? The ukulele is a valid music instrument in its own right, not some sort of training wheels to help one later change over to a guitar. Besides diminishing my instrument, I felt like he was diminishing my friend's accomplishment, but I didn't feel like I could say that in a way that wouldn't start a fight, so I'm coming to say it here.
  2. Over on Threads, a group of people who live in Minneapolis were complaining about people who live in the suburbs saying they live in Minneapolis, one of them even going so far as to compare it to stolen valor. I live in one of the first ring suburbs of Minneapolis and when — as I do on occasion — I say I live in Minneapolis, it's not intended as some sort of flex. It all boils down to some variant of "How important is it to me that this person knows the actual physical location of my house?" and "Do I think it's worth the time to explain to this person exactly where the suburb I live in it located?" If I think I'm talking to one of these Minneapolis people who's going to make an issue of it, I'll sometimes say "One of the first-ring suburbs," generally supplemented by the quadrant of the metro area. In general, unless the person is going to come to my actual house (which almost never happens), I feel no need to tell them exactly which suburb I live in and then explain where it is because they don't know.

I had a very strange dream last night. It wasn't the content that made it strange — it was a fairly standard thriller/rom-com, featuring Japanese gangsters and a trip to Hawaii. What made it strange (for my dreams at any rate) was that I wasn't in the dream at all. The entire dream was in third person, like I was watching a movie. In fact, this dream started Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei!

The sixty-sixth single is out now and this is the last of our senbatsu entries! Foo Yi Shyan debuted as part of the new sister group, KLP48, in 2024. The first generation—including Lucine, who is currently my favourite—debuted in July of last year, joined also by several overseas members, including former Team 8 member, Gyoten Yurina. At present, auditions for the group's second generation have just wrapped up this month, so I expect there will be an announcement about that very soon, probably after the fuss about the AKB anniversary has died down, yet even without that, KLP have already released a total of four singles including the Yi Shyan centre cover of oh my pumpkin!, and have a cover of Green Flash on the cards for later this year. I think that the rise in digital single releases is something that has allowed the sister groups to flourish. Even before signing with a major label for distribution, these groups have been able to put out regular releases without making so much of a gamble on issuing them as physical indie releases, something that was the norm for AKB when Sakura no Hanabiratachi and Skirt, Hirari were released.

KLP's first single, a cover of Heavy Rotation, wasn't exactly favourable, and I don't want you to think that it's because I'm a perv, but... I do think that treating the song in such a way is to pretend that is has no associations at all, and that kind of makes me miserable.

Into all this, Yi Shyan stepped, made an official member with her peers one month, given captainship of her entire group the next. Having previously stared in a, ah, 'tiktok drama' drama, From Palace to Present, and having formerly auditioned for K-pop acts, it's surprising that it took until the KLP version of oh my pumpkin! for her to take the centre role. Having said that, Green Flash is apparently going to be a Wcentre with fellow first generation member, Made Devi Ranita Ningtara, so maybe Yi Shyan was the trump card that management were keeping up their sleeves now that increased attention will be on the sister groups following the AKB anniversary single. Born in June 2004, there isn't really that much information available outside of Malaysia for me to share with you. Again, I am haunted by the fact that these entries may better serve you if they were written by someone with experience in the territories such groups are based in, but instead... you've got me, overly enthusiastic, trying to convey each Wednesday the way AKB has changed my life.

What interests me the most is that KLP have stated they are willing to take in members of any nationality, that they are not necessarily looking solely for Malaysian members. With their new theatre opening soon, I think both the group and their captain are going on to great things!

Yi Shyan!

Ah, friends! I really can't wait for my copy of the single to arrive!

TIL about the economics of managing a Chinese merchant ship in the 18th and 19th centuries:

The operations of junks were labor intensive — they required about ninety sailors per vessel — but these sailors were not paid. Instead, they were permitted to carry a certain amount in freight (by the early nineteenth century, about seven piculs — 933 pounds — in freight)."

Going through old links today, I came across this cover from Weki Meki's Ji Suyeon that I'd set aside to listen to back in February and then forgotten about.

The original, sung by Choi Yu Ree for the Disney+ original series Call It Love is available here, if you're interested. Choi Yu Ree's voice seems to be stronger than Suyeon's, but that could be a side-effect of production — even though they're both singing over the same backing track, they're not recorded under identical conditions, so it's still not completely a 1:1 comparison. If you skip ahead to 3:00, I think Suyeon's voice is stronger on the higher notes (come on: did you really expect me not to find a way to defend Suyeon?), but they both sang really well.
